French Fries

French FriesThe French fries that we all love is made out of the humble potato. Potatoes were not an acceptable edible item among the Europeans due to their bitter taste. Several breeding techniques were later used to make them less bitter.

A French officer was imprisoned in Germany during the Seven Years Wars where he ate these potatoes and later introduced them to the French court. It was in 1840s that someone sliced these potatoes into slender pieces and fried them. They became an instant hit and started selling like hot cakes in Paris.

These then spread to America where they were first called French fried potatoes which was shortened to French fries.
